Liverpool defender hoping to follow in the footsteps of £13m talent after pre-season success

Jarell Quansah, a Liverpool defender, has impressed with the first-team during pre-season, and the youngster could be included in the squad in the future.

The 20-year-old is part of a strong academy contingent that has so far impressed Jurgen Klopp. Quansah had a brief loan spell at Bristol Rovers, where he played 16 League 1 games, including 15 starts, and gained valuable senior minutes.

Prior to the club’s pre-season travels, he reflected on the experience with the official Liverpool website: “It was valuable experience that I needed.” I learned so much, and I can tell from my performances that I still have a lot to learn, even though I’ve shown that I can hold my own.”

The Reds were linked with a move for Chelsea’s Levi Colwill, another young defender who has progressed through the leagues and shone at youth international level before joining Brighton on loan last season. Quansah’s career path has been similar, albeit a few years later, but he’s looking more and more like a player Klopp might keep.

During their most recent pre-season win over Leicester, he produced an inspired goal-saving block by putting his body on the line. Aside from that, he went about his business in the side, looking composed and at ease.

He completed 36 of his 37 passes, and his ability to play forward has been extremely impressive, as he has recorded two key passes in the games so far, more than any other centre-back.

In addition, he has won six of his seven defensive duels, has 14 recoveries, six interceptions, and has completed 20/21 forward passes. His ability to play out from the back, combined with his 1.90m athletic frame and calm demeanor, has piqued the interest of many.

If he makes the first-team squad, he will be the first in a long time. Of course, the last centre-back to break into the first-team squad is Nat Phillips, who broke into the first-team during Liverpool’s defensive crisis in the 2020/21 season but has remained on the periphery ever since.

The club was hesitant to let him go as recently as January due to injuries to their centre-back quartet, all of whom are prone to knocks on a regular basis.

Given that Phillips deserves a move to finally achieve regular first-team football, Quansah can only join the first-team squad if Phillips leaves, which, unfortunately, hasn’t happened despite previous interest from Leeds.

If he is included in the squad, Quansah could see action in the Europa League group stages as well as the early rounds of cup competitions. If he doesn’t, a loan move to a Championship or League 1 club, or even abroad, is clearly the best option.

The club appears to be keeping Joel Matip for another season, which means he will finish his contract and become a free agent next summer. This could allow Quansah to play on loan this season before potentially breaking into the squad next year, and fans are already eager to see the talented defender in action.
